Our specialty at Tiro Security is cybersecurity and GRC, and here is one of the reasons I highly recommend it: the great thing about cybersecurity is that there is an element of it in every single role inside IT (and even outside of IT). Because of that, I tell people who are looking to break into a cybersecurity career that a great way to get there is by taking a generalist IT role first and working your way from there.

One of the biggest challenges with cybersecurity is that a lot of people are really excited and passionate to start a cybersecurity career, but many won’t consider taking a job in IT and transitioning. This is a problem because entry-level cybersecurity positions are few and far between. The skills gap is getting even bigger, and cybersecurity teams are overworked, stressed and have little time to train, so they can’t hire entry-level people.

Coming in through IT is an exceptional way – and the most common – to build the foundational skills you need to successfully enter into a cybersecurity career.
